  • Q: Best Cases For IPhone 12 And IPhone 12 Pro
    A:
    Concrete seatid="article-body" class="row" section="article-body">

This is a design-change year for the iPhone, which means last year's iPhone 11 cases won't fit the new iPhone 12 models, which include the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro (out now), as well as the iPhone 12 Pro Max and 12 Mini (coming in November). Apple has returned to a square-edged design that harkens back to the iPhone 5 and 5S. If you're trying to decide between the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro, the good news -- from a case standpoint anyway -- is that those models are identical in size and take the same case. The iPhone 12 Max and iPhone 12 Mini haven't arrived yet, but cases are already available for those models.

Read more: iPhone 12 drop test results are in

Note that all the new iPhone 12 models are equipped with Apple's new MagSafe feature, which allows faster wireless charging with a compatible charger. It also supports optional accessories -- including a mini wallet -- that adhere magnetically to the back of your phone. The new iPhones are embedded with what Apple describes as "an array of magnets" (Apple says they're recycled) around a centered charging coil that can pull up to 15 watts of power. That's twice as powerful as wireless charging on previous iPhones, but on par with the power that many Android phones can draw from standard Qi wireless chargers.

You'll need an Apple MagSafe charger or an Apple-approved MagSafe charger from a third-party accessory maker to get the 15W charging speeds, but your phone will still charge at up to 7.5W with standard wireless chargers that support that speed or higher. Most of the cases on this list are compatible with wireless charging, but we haven't tested them yet with Apple's MagSafe charger. We'll add those results once we get the relevant devices in the coming days.

In addition to MagSafe results, I'll be updating this list with new options as they continue to arrive. In the meantime, this list is based on case brands we've grown to like on previous iPhones. Finally, many of these links go straight to the manufacturer's website for now, but the cases should appear at Amazon and other retailers in the near future.

In the last year, Speck came out with some new case designs for the iPhone 11 and they're now available for the iPhone 12. Because I have expensive tastes, I personally like the $60 Presido2 Armor Cloud (white model on the right in the photo). But the Presidio2 Pro (gray case in the photo) is also excellent. If you want a clear case, Speck has several models to choose from, including the Presidio Perfect-Clear with Grips.

All the new models have very good drop protection (13 to 16 feet, depending on the model) as well as Speck's Microban antimicrobial protection. The cases start at $40 in various color options, but Speck does give you 30% off on your first order on its website.

    David Carnoy/CNET

I've become a recent fan of Clckr's cases, which feature a built-in stand and grip strap that folds out and clicks into place on the back of your phone. Clckr sells just the stand-strap accessory to stick on the back of your phone or on a case, but the case with the integrated stand accessory is better and comes in a few different styles, including clear (I like the Saffiano blue but it's currently only available in black). Clear models start at $30.

The cases aren't rugged but they're protective enough, with raised edges to protect the screen. The one I've used with my iPhone 11 Pro for the last four months has held up well.

With the stand clicked in place, you can use your device hands-free in either portrait or landscape mode. Note that you can wirelessly charge your phone with this case on, though you have to be more careful about placing it in the right spot on a wireless charging pad for it to work. The new models have antimicrobial protection.

    Amazon

If you're looking for a cheap clear case for your new iPhone 12, Spigen's Ultra Hybrid is a good value at around $12 to $15, depending on the trim color or which version of iPhone 12 you have (yes, there are a few color options).

No drop rating is listed for the case, but it feels like Spigen's transparent cases offer reasonable protection. If you want stronger protection, Spigen's Tough Armor case is an option for $17, but I personally prefer Spigen's Ultra and Neo Hybrid cases. Note that a lot of these cheaper clear cases have a habit of turning yellow and degrading over time (and becoming less translucent), but they're cheap enough that you probably won't mind shelling out for a replacement if that happens.

    Amazon

The company's superprotective Defender series case is available for all the iPhone 12 models, but most people want something less bulky. The Symmetry series is slim with beveled edges, making it a good mix of sleek and protective. A raised bumper helps act as a screen protector.

Multiple color options are available, including clear, and I'm digging the clear version of the Symmetry Plus Pop case, pictured in the middle, which integrates a PopSockets PopGrip (it's wireless charging-compatible, which is important). Prices range from $50 to $60 (AU$59, £29). Otterbox offers a discount for first-time buyers on its site.

Otterbox's Commuter case offers slightly more protection and is also pretty slim and has grips on the back for, yes, a little added grip.

    David Carnoy/CNET

As noted, your new iPhone 12 includes Apple's new MagSafe feature, which allows you to attach accessories to its back, including a new wireless charger and a leather wallet. Those accessories will still stick to your phone if you have a standard thin case, but not nearly as well as if you use one of Apple's MagSafe cases, which have their own set of embedded magnets that line up with the magnets in your phone.

Apple's Clear Case with MagSafe is nice because it allows you to show off your phone's colored finish and the embedded markings tell you exactly where to attach the MagSafe charger for optimal charging speeds (you apparently need Apple's 20W USB-C charging to get the maximum 15W wireless charging speeds). The only issue with the clear case is that it leaves the bottom of your phone exposed.

If that bothers you, the Silicone case (pictured, left) with MagSafe is the better option. It works the same way as the Clear case does, with an embedded magnet ring, you just can't see it. The Silicone case is available in eight color options.

Getting into the MagSafe ecosystem isn't a cheap proposition, but it is fun to play with magnetic objects and offers some conveniences. The bottom line is that if you do want to venture into this and to protect your phone with a case, you're best off with one of Apple's cases or another MagSafe-certified case.

    David Carnoy/CNET

British case-maker Gear4, now owned by Zagg, makes cases that are right there with Otterbox and Speck, all of them lined with the company's D3O shock-absorbing material and featuring beveled edges to protect your phone. My favorites include (from left to right) the Wembley Palette, Crystal Palace Iridescent, Battersea and Picadilly. All of them are rated for 13-foot drop protection and the Battersea is rated for 16 feet. They range in price from $30 to around $50.

    David Carnoy/CNET

X-Doria's Raptic series cases come in variety of styles and cost a little less than competing premium cases from Speck and Otterbox. The thicker Raptic Shield (pictured on left) costs $30 while the Raptic Air (pictured on right), which I personally like, is $40. The Shield has 10-foot drop protection while the Air is rated for 13-foot drop protection. Both have an antimicrobial treatment.

    David Carnoy/CNET

Casetify's cases are known for their eye-catching designs (that are stuck onto the back of a clear case). They're relatively slim, sleek-looking cases that offer decent protection and come in a variety of design patterns, with some definite appeal to teenagers. Some of the designs are hit-or-miss but I liked the samples I got. I should note that prices appear to have gone up. Casetify cases used to be more in the $40 to $50 range, but they now start at $55. In time, the prices should come down a bit.

    David Carnoy/CNET

Rokform's been making tough iPhone cases for years and aside from their durability, their key feature is the ability to use them with various mounts -- including bike and motorcycle mounts -- that are sold separately. I personally prefer the Crystal Series but the Rugged case is slightly more, well, rugged.

Rokform's cases have removable magnets and they're compatible with wireless charging if you remove the included center magnet. "With the lower magnet still intact, you can still wireless-charge while utilizing magnetic mounting and all of our mounts," Rokform says.

Rokform cases aren't quite out yet but they are available for preorder.

    David Carnoy/CNET

BodyGuardz was initially known for its screen protectors, but in recent years it's put out some interesting iPhone cases. I personally like the $45 Harmony (pictured left), which has a more square bottom. The Stack (picture in the middle) is $40 while the Avenue (on right) is $45. They come in a few color options.

    David Carnoy/CNET

Smartish's affordable, simple, slim cases and wallet cases return for the iPhone 12. The Wallet Slayer 2.0 case (pictured on left and right) costs a little more now ($25) but comes in a variety of designs. It holds three credit cards plus cash and you can use one of your credit cards as a kickstand.

Smartish also sells a simple translucent case for $15.

    David Carnoy/CNET

UK-based Torro makes some nice leather-clad cases that aren't too expensive (leather cases tend to cost over $50). The Torro Leather Bumper ($38) is a pretty straightforward bumper case with a leather back while the Wallet Case ($40) is a bit swankier overall, has a magnetic clasp and multiple card slots and converts into a stand for video viewing. It's one of the better folio wallet cases you'll find for the money. Both are available in multiple color options.

    David Carnoy/CNET

Mous makes several cases that have eye-catching designs, all lined with the company's AiroShock material that, according to the company, delivers excellent protection in a slim design. They do seem durable and all include a lifetime warranty.

While Mous makes a transparent case, I like the cases in Mous' Limitless 3.0 line, which are compatible with the company's Limitless 3.0 accessories. That includes a wallet that magnetically adheres to the back of the case and a few mounts, one of which is an air-vent mount for your Number 1 airport car services around me

It's also worth noting that these Mous cases are the only ones I've seen that have a SIM card storage slot on the inside of the smartphone case for international travelers in the habit of swapping SIM cards.

    David Carnoy/CNET

I've always liked Moshi cases and its iGlaze, Altra and Vitros (pictured from left to right) return for the iPhone 12, 12 Pro, 12 Mini and 12 Pro Max. The Altra is the most distinct-looking and has a geometric rubber finish that makes your phone nice and grippy. It also includes a lanyard. Not pictured is the Overture (coming soon), a two-in-one folio wallet case. You fit your iPhone into a slim shell case that then magnetically adheres to the cover, which has slots for storing credit cards and cash. Moshi's cases range in price from $25 to $50.

    David Carnoy/CNET

Nomad makes a line of nice iPhone 12 Horween leather cases that are designed to develop a "rugged" patina as the oils from your skin interact with them over time. The new Rugged cases are available in black, brown and a lighter natural color that I like. They're rated for 10-foot (3-meter) drop protection. The standard Rugged case runs around $50, while the Rugged Folio version, which has a flap that covers the screen, costs $70.

    David Carnoy/CNET

You know all those compact discs you no longer listen to? Well, Nimble makes translucent iPhone cases out of them. They're a little pricey at $40 but some of us like the idea of protecting the latest technology with recycled technology and don't mind paying a little extra for that. They have antimicrobial protection, are scratch-resistant and aren't supposed to turn yellow over time. While the Disc Case is slim, it's rated for 6-foot drop protection.

    David Carnoy/CNET

Case-Mate makes a variety of color cases, some of which have glitter integrated into their translucent designs. I only got a look at the twinkle ombre case, but the iridescent soap bubble and tough groove cases also look cool.

    David Carnoy/CNET

If selfies are your thing, then you're probably aware of LuMee cases that have built-in lighting. This Paris Hilton-endorsed Holographic version has an iridescent design. It charges via USB-C and gives you 30 minutes of "studio lighting" at full brightness. The case does allow wireless charging and you can adjust the brightness levels of the light.

    David Carnoy/CNET

I wasn't a fan of earlier Pelican cases, which were very protective but just a little too bulky (and ugly), but in the last couple of years (starting with the iPhone 11), the company, now owned by Case-mate, added some slimmer designs, including two that I like: the Protector (pictured, middle in camo color) and the Rogue (at left and right), which has a soft rubber bubbled pattern.

    David Carnoy/CNET

Apple upgraded the cameras in its iPhone 12 models, with the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max offering step-up camera options (the iPhone Max is the best in the imaging department). But a select few accessory makers like Moment allow you to enhance your shooting with add-on lenses and filters. Sold separately from the case, the lenses aren't cheap, but they are high-quality.

Moment's iPhone cases include an insertable mount that can be removed when you're not playing around with any optional lenses, which are easy to attach. Its Thin Case is a simple but attractive rubberized case made out of compostable bio-plastic that's rated for 6-foot drop protection. Cases with wood and canvas on their backs are also available. They all ship in November.

    David Carnoy/CNET

Razer, which makes laptops and gaming accessories (among other products), also makes iPhone "gaming" cases. They have something called Thermaphene-Based Heat Dissipation that "redirects trapped heat through a thermally conductive lining adjacent to vented airflow channels to significantly improve cooling compared with traditional cases." It's a bit of a gimmick, but it seems to help a little when you're playing graphics-intensive games for long periods.

Razer had a slim Arctech case for the iPhone 11, but right now it only has the Arctech Pro for the iPhone 12 models. It's been redesigned from last year's Arctech Pro -- it seems even more protective -- and adds an antibacterial coating.

  • Q: Give The Ultimate Gift This Year: Better Wi-Fi
    A:
    id="article-body" class="row" section="article-body">

    JFK-Motorcade-4.jpg

This story is part of Holiday Gift Guide 2020, CNET's gift picks with expert advice, reviews and recommendations for the latest tech gifts for you and your family.

The coronavirus has highlighted the importance of the internet in most households, and if your family is struggling with spotty Wi-Fi, it might be time to consider giving the gift of a faster router for the holidays.

Between a surge of options in the mesh category and the debut of speedy new Wi-Fi 6 routers, there are plenty of options to consider, but we can help you narrow your search with our picks for a router gift. We update this list periodically.

Read more: The best Wi-Fi routers in 2020

    Ry Crist/CNET

Last year, the Asus RT-AC86U finished right at the top of the pack in our gaming router tests, even beating out fancier, flashier, more expensive competitors. Now, in 2020, the brand is back with a follow-up called the Asus RT-AX86U -- and as the switch from "AC" to "AX" indicates, it supports Wi-Fi 6, the newest, fastest and most efficient version of Wi-Fi.

We're still in the process of putting this gaming router through its paces, but after testing it out at my home, I've seen enough to say that this $249 gaming router is one of the best you can buy. Not only was it able to blanket my entire home with a fast, reliable Wi-Fi 6 connection, no range extenders needed, but it also held my latency below 20ms across well over a hundred speed tests from various spots throughout my house. Low latency like that is key for online gaming, and the RT-AX86U keeps latency at bay better than any other router I've tested. Ever.

Even if you aren't a gamer, this is about as rock-solid as routers get, and it would make a terrific gift for anyone in need of a home networking upgrade. The true die-hards might be tempted to hold out for the Asus GT-AXE11000, a triband gaming router coming this December with support for Wi-Fi 6E, which adds in access to the 6GHz band as sort of an exclusive fast lane for the most advanced devices. But routers like that one are overkill for almost everyone, and they'll cost hundreds more than what the RT-AX86U is selling for. If you're shopping for a router to give as a gift in 2020, this is the first one I'd point you towards.

Read our Asus RT-AX86U hands-on first take.

OK, so the uninspired white plastic is about as generic as it gets, but it was Eero that first brought mesh to the masses several years ago -- and when it comes to the software and algorithms that make multi-point mesh networking possible, Eero does it better than just about everyone else. Now, a year after getting acquired by Amazon, Eero is back with brand new mesh systems just in time for the holiday buying season -- and they add in support for Wi-Fi 6 (sensing a theme here?)

Your new flagship is the Eero 6, pictured above. Available in a two-pack with the system's router and one range-extending satellite device for $199, it's about as inexpensive as Wi-Fi 6 mesh routers get, and it also adds in a built-in Zigbee radio that'll let you pair things like Philips Hue bulbs with Amazon's Alexa without need of an extra hub. It won't be as blazingly fast as some of the other routers on this list, but it'll still be able to maximize speeds in homes with internet connections of 500Mbps or less, which is basically everyone who doesn't have a gigabit connection (in other words, most of us). And if you ever want to expand the range of your system, additional satellite devices are just $89 apiece.

Those looking for something a little more powerful should invest in a triband mesh router that can dedicate a third band to network traffic between the router and satellites. You can keep reading for some suggestions, or you can take a look at the Eero Pro 6, which offers exactly that at a price of $399 for a two-pack. But in the majority of cases, the regular Eero 6 should be more than enough to help you get the most out of your home's internet connection.

Read our Eero 6 first take.

If you want the ultimate Wi Fi router upgrade, then you should look for a couple of things. You want speed, obviously -- but you'll notice the biggest difference if you make the jump to a mesh system designed to keep those speeds consistent for connected devices throughout your entire home from your iPad or tablet to your smartphone. And, among mesh routers, the feature that makes the biggest impact on performance is triband design, where you get the standard 2.4 and 5GHz bands plus an additional 5GHz band that you can dedicate to local network traffic between the router and the satellites. That speeds everything up.

The best router like that? That'd be the Netgear Orbi AX6000, a high-powered Wi-Fi 6 mesh router that's designed to handle gigabit speeds and then some. In fact, it notched the fastest top speeds we've ever seen from a mesh router, and performed like a champ throughout multiple rounds of gaming router tests at our lab, at the CNET Smart Home, and at my own home here in Louisville, Kentucky.

At $699 for a two-piece system, this version of Orbi is about as expensive as routers get, so pencil it in for someone on the extra-extra-nice list.

Read our Netgear Orbi AX6000 review.

    Tyler Lizenby/CNET

If the $199 Eero 6 is your entry-level Wi-Fi 6 mesh router, and the $699 Netgear Orbi AX6000 is your top-of-the-line splurge, then the $449 Asus ZenWiFi AX is the sensible middle-ground pick that's probably the easiest to justify buying. The system flat-out aced our tests earlier this year, and finished in a close second to Netgear in terms of overall performance. That's exceptional given that the two-piece Asus system costs about $250 less than the two-piece Orbi AX6000 setup.

With outstanding range, reliability and top speeds, plus key additions like a multigig WAN port, a triband design, and a feature-rich app, the Asus ZenWiFi AX checks all of the boxes I'd look for in a high-end mesh router -- and while specs like that don't come cheap, it'll still get you there for less cash than the competition. If anything, this might be the router option that you should gift to yourself.

Read our Asus ZenWiFi AX review.

    Ry Crist/CNET

Not looking to spend hundreds on an entire new router? You can expand the range of your wireless network for a lot less by going with a simple, plug-in range extender instead. I tested several out earlier this year, and the best of the bunch was the TP-Link RE220, available for just $25.

The RE220 was the least expensive range extender I tested, but you wouldn't know it from the performance. While other, more expensive extenders struggled to hold speeds above 50Mbps in the back of my house, where the Wi-Fi typically drops out, the RE220 was able to hold speeds comfortably above 80Mbps, and it never dropped my connection once. Just plug it in, press a button to pair it with your router, and boom, signal boosted. It'll stuff a stocking just fine.

Read our Wi-Fi range extender group test.

  • Q: Microsoft: 'Please Don't Blow Vape Smoke Into Your Xbox Series X'
    A:
    Car-Service-Taxi-Brooklyn-New-York-Ave-Uid="article-body" class="row" section="article-body">

    Twitter/Xbox Studio

The Xbox Series X is only two days old and Microsoft has already been forced to tell people to not blow vape smoke into their consoles. Really.

As the next-generation Xbox became available on Tuesday, videos started to emerge on social media of consoles "overheating" and spewing  smoke though its vents up top. People began to quickly question whether the videos were fake, and a Spanish-language Twitter account called Xbox Studio (not an official Xbox account) showed how the smokey effect that people were claiming to be caused by overheating was more likely being achieved through blowing vape smoke into the console.

    window.CnetFunctions.logWithLabel('%c One Trust ', "Service loaded: script_twitterwidget with class optanon-category-5");

Xbox Studio's debunking video was retweeted over 3,400 times as of Wednesday, of course leading to a few folks trying their own DIY Xbox vape.

"We can't believe we have to say this," the official Xbox account tweeted on Wednesday, "but please do not blow vape smoke into your Xbox Series X." Aaron Greenberg, head of marketing for Xbox, tweeted: "Put down the vape and pick up the controller." Too true, Aaron. Too true.

When asked for a comment about videos alleging to show the Xbox Series X smoking, a Microsoft spokesperson on Wednesday morning said the company takes all product safety reports seriously and was investigating further.

The Xbox Series X launched Tuesday alongside the smaller, cheaper and less powerful Xbox Series S. The Series X will set you back $500 (£450, AU$749), while the Series S, with no disc drive or 4K capability, is a more affordable $300 (£250, AU$499). The PlayStation 5 follows on Thursday

  • Q: Apple's New MacBook And Mac Mini Could Change PCs As We Know Them
    A:
    id="article-body" class="row" section="article-body">

Typically, people talk about the way Apple's devices look. But this time what matters most is under the hood.

    Sarah Tew/CNET

This story is part of Apple Event, our full coverage of the latest news from Apple headquarters.

On Tuesday, Apple announced its first personal computers powered using chips that are more like those in an iPhone than those in a typical PC. The machines are the $999 13-inch MacBook Air, the $699 Mac Mini and the $1,299 MacBook Pro. That alone is exciting to tech fans, but it's also a sign of what's possibly to come, whether you buy a Mac or not. Apple has said it's going to change the brains of its computers over the next couple of years. Starting with the just-unveiled machines, Apple is going to throw its weight behind its self-made chips.

Most people may not care about a change to a small chip in their Mac computers, but it could mean big changes for Apple and the tech industry, too. For the past 14 years, Apple has relied on Intel-made chips to power its laptop and desktop computers. Apple has spent more than a decade on research and development, and at least $1 billion buying more than half a dozen companies, to create the M1, a chip similar to those in iPhones and iPads and that takes on Intel. Now Apple's first computers powered by the M1 have been made available for preorder and will start shipping next week.

Apple silicon Macs: Don't get them yet

    6:20

Apple says the M1 is more powerful and energy efficient, allowing for potentially smaller and slimmer designs, longer battery life and new technologies as well.

"Advancements of this magnitude only come from making bold changes," Apple CEO Tim Cook said during Apple's event Tuesday. He added that Apple's own chips will usher in new technologies and "extraordinary battery life" from the computers. "This is exactly why we are transitioning the Mac to Apple silicon," Cook added.

For Apple, this moment has been more than a decade in the making. The question that's nagged the company since co-founder Steve Jobs died in 2011 is, What comes next? Jobs ushered in the Mac computer, the iMac all-in-one desktop, the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad. Since his death, Apple's biggest new product has been the Apple Watch, which has turned into an enormous business. Last year it outsold, by a huge margin, the entire Swiss watch industry. Still, it's not an iPhone-like dent in the universe.

By combining all its devices under the same chips and common code, Apple will be able to offer an experience that truly spans its desktops, laptops, phones and watches. The company has already said app developers will be able to create one app and send it to all devices, with adjustments for keyboard and mouse versus finger touch and gestures.

The result may be a further blurring of the lines between what a computer is, and what it's meant to do.

The changes are already beginning with Apple's newest computer software, MacOS 11 Big Sur, which brings to PCs even more of the icons, sounds and general look of the iOS software that powers iPhones. Big Sur will be made available on Thursday for free for recently made Macs.

"With the current Mac -- it's the Mac versus the PC," said Carolina Milanesi, an analyst at Creative Strategies. "Now, if it behaves like an iPhone, I can manage it like an extension of my iOS devices."

Apple's iPad Air uses the new A14 Bionic chip. It's got 11.8 billion transistors.

Apple's iPad Air and iPhone 12 use the company's A14 Bionic chip. The new Macs might too.

    What may come

    apple-iphone-logo-3743

The difference between computers and phones is becoming a matter of screen size.

    Angela Lang/CNET

Apple says its transition to new chips may be a little bumpy, as app developers change the way their apps are coded to work with this new machinery. In the meantime, Apple promises most of the software we all use, including web browsers; photo and movie editors from all sorts of companies; and even , will work on the new machines on day one.

What's likely to change more than anything involves a component other than the chip for the laptop and desktop. Apple's iPhones and iPads don't have fans to keep their chips cool. So far, the company has pulled off that same trick with its MacBook Air laptops, though its new Mac Mini and MacBook Pro do have fans.

But aside from those changes, and what-if speculation about detachable laptop-iPad hybrids, Apple watchers seem hard pressed to come up with design-change ideas. (Writer's note: Apple, please bring back the MagSafe magnetic charging cables to the laptops. Pretty please.)

Another longer term play may be the integration of cellular service into these types of mobile chips. Computers with built-in cellular radios have been niche products at best car service New York 10030, but these kinds of processors are designed to work with cellular radios. People buy connected iPads all the time -- a connected MacBook Air isn't a huge leap.

Though that's not likely to come out any time soon, cell carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon will probably be eager to get 5G into a future generation of Apple's silicon-based MacBooks.

    New way to pay

    apple-card

Apple's credit card may be the company's secret weapon when it comes to getting more people to consider Mac computers.

    CNET

By switching to its own chips and away from ones made by Intel, Apple will get more than the expected performance and power efficiency boost. It'll be able to more closely tune its software to work with its specialized chips, for example. And the company will also be able to manage manufacturing.

"When you control your own destiny and control your own parts, you can save money," said Bob O'Donnell, an analyst at Technalysis Research.

Generally, O'Donnell said, chip prices make up at least 20% of a laptop's costs. If Apple were to turn those savings into lower prices, it could attract new people who now just won't pay or can't afford the company's laptops, which start at $999.

It may also spark consumer interest and spur competition from other PC makers, who've so far only toyed with using mobile-phone chips in computers (though with just under 7% market share in 2019, according to IDC).

But the Apple credit card could be the company's true ace up its sleeve, analysts say. Putting Macs on a two-year, interest-free installment plan could get people hooked on the idea of buying a computer for about $42 a month.

"Getting the Mac into a larger population could be huge," O'Donnell said.

Regardless, Apple's move is bound to make waves, both by showing us how powerful its iPhone chips are, and potentially spurring the industry to change their devices to keep up.

"This is the biggest announcement in 'computers' in a long time," tweeted Steven Sinofsky, a venture capitalist who oversaw Microsoft's Windows software division more than a decade ago. "The real impact is the direction this takes things."

  • Q: Judi Dench's Beau David Mills Keeps Careful Arm Her As They Leave JFK
    A:

She has admitted that she can't see well enough to read her scripts now because of macular degeneration in her eyes.

And even walking through a busy airport could have been a challenge for Dame Judi Dench.

But the 80-year-old actress was carefully chaperoned by her beau, British conservationist David Mills, when they turned up at New York's JFK Airport Pickup airport on Monday.

    Scroll down for video

A steadying hand: Dame Judi Dench's beau David Mills kept an arm around the 80-year-old actress, who has admitted she has trouble seeing now because of macular degeneration

The 71-year-old put a protective arm around the petite 5ft 1ins actress as she stood behind an SUV, making sure that she didn't trip over the kerb behind her.

The stalwart of screen and stage, who was her usual smiley self, was dressed in a knee-length cream coat with a matching woolly scarf wrapped around her neck, stone-coloured trousers and suede boots.

With her white, pixie-cut hair, the only pop of colour in Dame Judi's ensemble came from the red purse she carried.

In contrast, David looked elegant in a black coat over a blue and white plaid shirt and black trousers.

Monochrome mix: The star was all smiles as walked across the concourse in a cream ensemble while the 71-year-old British conservationist went for black

He tied a chic black and grey silk scarf around his neck as he walked closely alongside his love of four years.

Dame Judi was heartbroken after losing actor-husband Michael Williams to cancer in 2001 following 30 years of marriage.

And she recently told The Times magazine that her relationship with David Mills took her by surprise.

'I wasn't even prepared to be ready for it...

It was very gradual and grown up. We got together, in a way, through the animals. It's just wonderful.'

Great companions: The couple have been dating for four years but Dame Judi revealed they have no plans to move in together

However, the Bond actress is adamant that the couple have no plans to live together, adding: 'We are much too independent.

And he is very busy. He has a business to run.'

Meanwhile Dame Judi's The Second Best Marigold Hotel opens in the US on Friday.

Director John Madden's original edition, about a group of retired folk who move from the UK to a chaotic retirement hotel in India, was a surprise sleeper hit in 2012. It cost just $10 million to make and earned $137 million in worldwide box office.

This time 65-year-old Richard Gere joins the gang of veteran British actors reprising their roles, including Bill Nighy, Dame Maggie Smith, Penelope Wilton, Ronald Pickup, Celia Imrie plus Dev Patel.

Best Buy's ongoing pre-Black Friday deals

    David Katzmaier/CNET

This deal is also available at Amazon and elsewhere but it's good enough to include here, too. The LG CX OLED TV is our favorite high-end TV of 2020 and this price is a new low, $200 less than the previous low -- making it $100 MORE than the 48-inch size.

This was $100 cheaper during last week's pre-Black Friday sale, but it's still a good deal.

And if you're in the mood for something bigger, the 65-inch size is $600 off; get it for $1,900.

This entry-level Samsung soundbar is half off. It supplies 2.1-channel sound by way of a soundbar with four 40-watt stereo speakers and a 130-watt subwoofer for a total output of 290 watts. That's a good amount of power for the price.

    Sarah Tew/CNET

The Beats Solo Pro are a very good set of on-ear noise-canceling headphones. The only issue is they're overpriced at $300. At $180, they're downright enticing. This is below the earlier sale price of $200 that we were seeing a few weeks back. .

    Dyson

In typical Dyson fashion, the Cyclone V10 is awesome but pricey. Knock $150 off its price, however, and this powerful, cordless stick vacuum becomes a more attractive proposition.

TCL is best known for its Roku TVs, and we like the Roku smart TV system better than the Android TV version in this television, but for this price you can just buy a , attach it to this TV and still come out ahead. Aside from its smarts we expect this 4-Series TV to perform "good enough,"

This model was discounted to $200 in a previous early Black Friday sale, so it may get there again -- but even at $250 it's worth a look.

Check to see if you can fit an 85-inch TV through your door -- this 4K set employs quantum dots for over a billion colors, with HDR support for enhanced dynamic range and a 240Hz refresh rate. The Tizen-based smart TV interface supports a wealth of channels including HBO Max, something Roku doesn't yet feature. It also offers voice control with Alexa and Google Assistant.

HP's excellent Spectre two-in-one convertible comes with an Intel Core i7 CPU with a generous 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. The most impressive part of this system, though, is the 4K touchscreen, which sets this convertible a step above most other two-in-ones that clock in around $1,000.

Upon spotting this deal, I immediately took a walk around my house looking for a spot for this beauty. I spent a number of years on the Golden Tee golf tour -- back in the days when people could go out to bars.

There are certain arcade games that can't be replicated on a console, and Golden Tee is one of them. But this machine includes the all-important trackball controller, which is why I'm determined to find a place for it under my roof. Given the number of quarters I used to feed into the real deal, this thing will likely pay for itself within a few weeks.

    Beats

The Beats Powerbeats Pro regularly hit $200 and sometimes get a little bigger discounts but $160 for the lava red version is near the lowest price we've seen. .

    Chris Monroe/CNET

The "middle child" Echo Show is also available at Prime Day pricing. If you're looking for something to sit on a kitchen counter or the like, this is almost certainly a better option than the 5.5-inch Show 5 -- and for just $20 more.

Or $25 more, if you opt to pick up a Blink Mini indoor camera at the same time. That gets you out the door for $70, a significant savings over the regular prices of buying these separately.

    Tyler Lizenby/CNET

It's beginning to look a lot like... Prime Day? That's because Amazon ushered out this all-time-low price earlier this month, and then Best Buy matched it -- which the store is now doing again. It's very unlikely this will go any lower on Black Friday, so why wait?

Note that you can also get the Echo Show 5 with a Blink Mini indoor camera for just $5 more.

Read the Echo Show 5 review.

    Lenovo

This basic laptop is a good pick for students looking for an affordable machine for remote learning. Currently offered at a $150 discount, it costs less than most Chromebooks. It runs Windows 10 and features a 10th-gen Intel Core i3 CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. The 15.6-inch display features a full HD (1,920x1,080-pixel) resolution, which offers a finer image than the 1,366x768-pixel resolution you get with most entry-level laptops.

    Joshua Goldman/CNET

The 13-inch Spectre x360 is one of CNET Reviews' favorite two-in-one convertibles for its premium styling, light weight and long battery life. And this isn't a case of a retailer using a deep discount to move out an older product. This 13.3-inch two-in-one is discounted by a hefty $250 and features Intel's latest silicon with a 11th-gen Intel Core i7 CPU. Getting a 512GB SSD instead of 256GB of storage is also a boon as this price.

    David Carnoy/CNET

Sony's newest noise-canceling headphone -- and arguably the top noise-canceling headphone out there -- recently went on sale for $300 as part of Amazon's Prime Day. It's now available for $278, its lowest price yet.  .

    David Carnoy/CNET

Jabra's Elite Active 75t are the slightly more rugged version of the Elite 75t, which are also on sale (they're $140 or $40 off). Both models are among the best true wireless earbuds out there and now can be upgraded with active noise canceling via a software upgrade (new models that shipped to stores recently may already be equipped with the upgrade).

The Elite Active 75t looks nearly identical to the Elite 75t, but upon closer inspection, you'll notice the finish on the case and earbuds is slightly different. Instead of the hard smooth finish of the Elite Active 75t, the Active 75t have a soft-to-the-touch finish with a touch of grip to it. Or, as Jabra put it, it's "built with a durable coating for dust and sweat resistance and features an increased  from IP56 (of the Elite Active 75t) to IP57, making them waterproof." .

    UE

UE's Megaboom 3 has been discounted to as low as $120, but we haven't seen it for less than that, so this is a solid deal on a very solid portable Bluetooth speaker. Granted, it was released in 2018. Only the black color is on sale for $100.

    Sarah Tew/CNET

The Jabra Elite 85h at $150 is a good value alternative to pricier premium noise-canceling headphones from Bose and Sony. It features good sound, a comfortable fit and excellent voice-calling performance, which makes it a good option for working from home. Amazon also has it for this price. .

  • Q: There Are Only So Many Options When It Comes To A Dulles Airport Car Service
    A:

The minute a person begins looking for a Dulles airport car service, they begin to realize there are many companies out there. The vast majority of these transportation services, though, are not the most reliable, dependable, or safe.

Still, is it better to choose a Dulles limo service or download an app?

Thanks to technology, there are apps people can download, and to their current location and destination, and 'order' a ride. Zubie Connected Car Service

The latest cars often come with telematics services that let you monitor maintenance and location from a smartphone app. The Zubie Connected Car Service lets you retrofit an older car with many of these capabilities.

Zubie consists of a "Key" that plugs into a car's OBD-II port, something you will find on every car built from 1996 on, and an associated smartphone app. The Key scans the car's internal data, and includes a GPS chip and mobile data connection.

The Key beams its data up to the Zubie mothership, which in turn makes it accessible to the smartphone app. Zubie's system works very similarly to other devices I've reviewed from

After a few setup steps, installing Zubie proved very easy. Upon loading the Zubie app onto my iPhone (there is also a version for Android), I had to sign up for an account. Then I entered the VIN and odometer reading for my car.

To connect the app to the Key, Zubie provides an activation code. But more conveniently, the company also includes a card with a CR code, so I could scan it with my phone's camera rather than type a string of letters and numbers.

After these steps, I plugged the Zubie Key into my car's OBD-II port (usually somewhere under the dashboard). For this test, I used a BMW 428i I happened to be reviewing. The Zubie Key is compact, so fit easily up under the BMW's dashboard, but its white coloring and brightly colored lettering made it anything but a stealthy install.

Zubie showed the details of any trip I took on a map.
    Screenshot by Wayne Cunningham/CNET

I was pleased to find that, after one short trip in the car, Zubie was up and running, making the data for that trip available to the app. This setup procedure was much simpler than that of the Delphi Vehicle Diagnostics device.

The account of my trip not only showed the entire route on a map, but registered data points for my top speed, amount of time spent idling, and any incidents of hard braking or acceleration. The BMW I was driving included an idle-stop feature, meant to save gasoline at stoplights, and the Zubie trip report included an amusing little exclamation point on the route for every time the engine shut down.

The app also posted that hard braking incident as an alert to my phone

After taking more trips with the Zubie Key installed, I found that it listed each trip by day. The app also rated my driving based on acceleration, braking, idling time, and speeding. Coming in at only 29 out of a 100, I had to conclude that the designers of Zubie had never driven in San Francisco. But the app was informative. I was interested to learn that, for one 3-mile trip through San Francisco, I spent 48 percent of the 26-minute excursion idling, due to a combination of traffic and poorly timed stoplights.

Zubie Connected Car ServiceZubie show a driving score based on data points such as braking.

I could have found the alerts about my hard braking and acceleration annoying or used them as a learning experience, but Zubie didn't intend them entirely for me. You can let your children borrow the family car and use the app to see where they are going and get a sense of how they are driving.

To further aid parents who use Zubie to keep track of their children's driving, the app includes a geofencing feature. You can enter a location, then indicate a circular boundary around it. If the car crosses that boundary, the app will pop up an alert.

Along with the tracking and driving coach features, the Zubie app also shows some basic vehicle health information. One screen shows the state of the battery, useful to avoid getting stuck in need of a jump. Another screen includes engine data status points, such as whether the fuel system or oxygen sensor are operating normally.

Zubie Connected Car ServiceZubie let me define a geofence for the car.
    Screenshot by Wayne Cunningham/CNET

The app has the ability to keep track of multiple cars equipped with Zubie Keys. However, I would also have liked to see a Web interface, which would have made it easier to set up geofencing and examine trip data.

Also missing from Zubie was any information about fuel economy. A device such as this offers a great opportunity to not only record a car's fuel economy, but to keep historical records and track fuel costs.

At $99.95 per year and no additional cost for the Key, the Zubie Key Connected Car Service is one of the cheapest connected OBD-II devices available. It sets up very easily and offers some good tracking features. However, the Audiovox car service from manhattan to jfk Connection includes more features and lets you track car information on both a Web site or app. Even cheaper, but lacking any remote connected features, is the

Airport shuttles are an economical and speedier ways to get to and from the airports.
Whether you need to go to the airport to see some someone, receive your friends or relatives or get off to your home or hotel, this is the best way to reach your destination. Whether you travel regularly or rarely to and from the airports, you will not face any problems if you take advantage of these services.

In fact, they are the most convenient option. Individuals who regularly need to fly must be well aware of the fact how difficult it is to get to the airport. It is the most expensive part of your traveling. Sometimes, you have to shell out hundreds of bucks to catch your flight if you're in a hurry.
In such a scenario, airport shuttle services offers you great advantages.

If you have landed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in USA, you don't need to worry about getting to your home or hotel.

If you would like to book a vehicle well in advance, courtesy phones are available. Had there been no airport shuttles, it would have been extremely difficult to reach your destination in time. Titled as "The World's Busiest Airport", it experiences around 250,000 passengers every day.
For such a huge Number 1 airport car services around me of individuals, almost all modes of transport would be less. But shuttle services have come as a respite to travelers offering an economical way to get from the airport to their homes or hotels.

O'Hare International Airport Chicago is also one of the busiest airports in the world.

But for tension free up and down to the airport, it is good to opt for airport shuttle service. Shuttle vans, cars, buses and limousines can be hired for reaching your destination from the airport. Even if you need to board a flight or get o the airport to receive your business delegates, this is certainly the best way.
It offers you great convenience at very affordable prices.

Los Angeles International Airport also offers economical Airport Shuttles. You can hire a shuttle van, bus, economical car or limousine depending upon your needs and requirements.

  • Q: The NYPD Cracked Down On Tuesday Night By Arresting More Than 280 People And Blocking 5,000 Protesters From Entering Manhattan By Holding Them Up On The Manhattan Bridge While Enforcing The 8pm Curfew
    A:

The NYPD cracked down on Tuesday night by arresting more than 280 people and blocking 5,000 protesters from entering Manhattan by holding them up on the Manhattan Bridge while enforcing the 8pm curfew.

It remains unclear if all 280 were arrested for breaking the curfew or if other offenses, like looting, were included in that number but it is a drastic reduction from the 700 that were arrested by Tuesday morning after a frightening 48-hour period that saw entire shopping districts in the city ransacked and ruined.

The curfew was brought forward from 11pm to 8pm on Tuesday and has been extended until Monday morning - when New York City begins its phase 1 of reopening after recovering from being the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic.

In response to the chaos that unfolded across Manhattan on Sunday and Monday night and growing criticism over the city's handling of it.

President Trump was among critics who said the city was 'totally out of control' and claimed the National Guard needed to be brought in.

After scrambling to keep up with looters on Monday night, NYPD officers - who all had their leave canceled on Tuesday - were seen arresting protesters for breaking curfew on Tuesday all over Manhattan.

They blocked a huge protest on the Manhattan Bridge, stopping some 5,000 marchers who planned to enter the city from Brooklyn. After holding the protesters on the bridge for more than two hours in a tense stand-off, the protesters retreated peacefully back into Brooklyn.

Some businesses, still unwilling to put their faith in the NYPD, have hired private security.

  • Q: Best Torque Wrenches For Cars In 2020 - Roadshow
    A:
    4 (New York City Subway service) - Wikipediaid="article-body" class="row" section="article-body">

Is it worth buying a torque wrench? If you do any serious automotive work, you're going to need one. It's not enough just disassembling a car's front suspension, pulling a cylinder head or swapping out wheels and then putting everything back together correctly without any leftover parts. No, to do any of these jobs properly, you need to make sure all the fasteners are appropriately tightened, and this is where a torque wrench comes in.

The upper control-arm bolts on your Dodge Challenger may require, say, 55 pound-feet of twist, whereas the aftermarket head studs for a Subaru BRZ engine you're building might take 115 pounds plus an additional 90 degrees of rotation to be properly fastened. In these cases, and countless more, it's mission-critical to have a torque wrench. Available in a range of sizes and types, torque wrenches enable you to tighten fasteners to a specified torque value, which is extremely important, especially in fields like aviation.

There are plenty of great torque wrenches to choose from; here are a few of the best.

    ACDelco/EPAuto/Gearwrench/Tekton/Tooluxe/Craig Cole/Roadshow

Tightening nuts and bolts to a manufacturer-recommended torque range enables specific components -- and the vehicle itself -- to function as designed. Not following these specs can result in damage to your car service manhattan ny or truck, shortened component life and many more headaches down the road. Properly tightening head bolts to a specific torque setting, for instance, is critical. You don't want to go through the aggravation of replacing a head gasket just to have it blow out again two weeks later because you didn't use a good torque wrench.

All this sounds both complicated and expensive, but luckily, it's neither. There's a wide range of available torque wrenches on the market today for every application and budget, from simple beam-style torque-wrench models that cost but a few bucks to electronic torque wrench units that are super accurate. Here are a few of the best torque wrenches available today, with our recommendations based on personal experience and buyer reviews. We'll update this periodically.

    EPAuto

The EPAuto torque wrench is an easy recommendation. A click wrench unit, you set the desired proper torque and start tightening in a clockwise direction. When the preset torque measurement amount is reached, it clicks to let you know. For added versatility, it works between 10 lb-ft and 80 lb-ft, which makes it ideal for a large number of tasks, automotive and otherwise. For added versatility, this click torque wrench has a 3/8-inch drive end, meaning it fits midsize sockets, though it also comes with an extension, but that's not all. Two adapters are included, too, allowing you to use ¼-inch and ½-inch sockets as well.

Ensuring the EPAuto torque wrench lasts, it's made from a hardened, chrome vanadium steel alloy. It also comes with a plastic storage case. Making this product a cinch to use, its adjustment barrel, which easily turns to change how much torque it applies, is clearly labeled in both foot-pounds and Newton meters, plus it has a knurled handle so you don't slip, even if your hands are greasy or dirty. You could do a lot worse than this EPAuto torque wrench, which costs just $25 and has a 4.5-star rating out of 5 stars after more than 2,300 user reviews.

    Lexivon

The next torque wrench on this list is burlier and more expensive than the EPAuto model listed above, but it's still very reasonably priced and even more versatile. The Lexivon unit highlighted here features a ½-inch drive end and is a click-type torque wrench. Like many other torque wrenches, its adjustment barrel features a knurled handle for a nonslip grip and its numbers are clearly marked -- a high-contrast yellow over black. This is a pretty stylish click torque wrench!

But looks are irrelevant; functionality is what counts, and this mechanical torque wrench unit offers plenty. It operates from 25 lb-ft up to a whopping 250 lb-ft of torque range. This gives you a huge torque setting range to work with, making it great for heavy-duty applications from engine and front-end service to tightening the lug nuts on a commercial truck. For added versatility, Lexivon offers several other torque-wrench models with ¼-, 3/8- and ½-inch drive ends. This unit is super versatile and affordable to boot, at just $56. But the icing on the cake is this product's 4.7-star rating after nearly 2,000 customer reviews.

    Gearwrench

Quality costs money. If you want the best, be prepared to spend more. Case in point: The Gearwrench ½-inch drive digital torque wrench. Sure, it stickers for $144 (it's cheaper at time of publication), but that's money well spent if your livelihood depends on a tool like this or if precision is paramount. Having personally used Gearwrench products myself, it makes great stuff, so you shouldn't be disappointed. This tool's operating torque range is between 20 lb-ft to 250 lb-ft, plus it should be accurate to within about 3% for the jobs that require precise torque.

But are digital torque wrenches better? The short answer is yes and no. They're easier to use and arguably more accurate, but tend to cost more. Setting this product apart from the other torque wrenches highlighted here, it is electronic. Rather than a clicking mechanism or a bar that bends as you apply force, it features circuits and sensors. You easily set the desired torque level using a series of buttons and the handle vibrates, a buzzer sounds and an LED shines when you reach that target torque amount, so there's no excuse for over-tightening any fasteners. For extra flexibility, it can be set in lb-ft, Nm, kgf-m and kg-cm. Keeping this precision instrument safe and secure, it comes with a plastic carrying case. This Gearwrench torque wrench's 4.6-star rating doesn't hurt, either.

    Tooluxe

If value is important and simplicity a top priority, consider this Tooluxe beam torque wrench (gotta love a punny name). This type of torque wrench is less convenient to use than either the click torque wrench or digital counterparts, but they are cheaper and dead simple. With no settings or mechanisms to deal with, you simply tighten fasteners in a clockwise direction while observing the indicator. When it points at the desired torque setting, you're all set.

This beam wrench is 18 inches long and operates from a torque value of zero to 150 lb-ft. Made of steel for long-haul durability, it's treated to a bright chrome finish that will look good in anyone's toolbox. For added versatility, it comes with a ½-inch drive end plus a 3/8-inch adapter. For less than 25 bucks, you can't go wrong here.

    Tekton

Thanks to its blend of versatility, value and excellent user reviews, this Tekton ½-inch drive torque wrench is our best overall recommendation. This clicking-type torque wrench can accurately tighten fasteners anywhere from 10 lb-ft to 150 lb-ft of torque value. It's made of durable steel, comes with a storage case, has easy-to-read scales and features a reversible ratchet head that drives in both directions, handy if you ever need to tighten something with a left-hand thread.

Another benefit of this Tekton torque wrench is precision. It's accurate to +/- 4%, which is hard to argue with. As for pricing, you can own all this goodness for a mere $40. And if buyer ratings are any indication, it should work extremely well, having earned a 4.7-star score from more than 7,000 reviews.

    ACDelco

Finally, if you need a torque wrench but don't have a place to put one, consider a digital torque adapter, like this nifty ACDelco unit. This tool clips onto the end of a ½-inch-drive socket wrench you already have, so you don't have to make room in your toolbox for another piece of hardware. Like the Gearwrench one listed above, this tool is digital. It can also be set between 25 and 250 lb-ft of set torque. When the desired torque is reached, three LEDs illuminate and an audible sound chimes, a digital way of saying, "Whoa there, partner. That's enough."

A precision piece of hardware, this tool is so accurate, the manufacturer says it can be used to calibrate other torque wrenches. For added peace of mind, this ACDelco tool comes with a one-year warranty and is highly rated. Not too shabby for $60. If you need a 3/8-inch-drive torque adapter, the company offers one as well, priced at $50.

4 things to know about torque wrenches

Manufacturers specify a torque rating for everything, whether it's a taillamp housing, wheel lug nut or a critical component like a cylinder-head bolt. Every component needs to be properly tightened -- but not overdone -- to work as designed and last as long as intended. This is why torque wrenches are so important. Yes, you can fudge things when tightening fasteners, that is, skip using a torque wrench because some automotive parts and systems are more important than others. If you're reattaching a piece of interior trim that should be torqued to 12 inch-pounds torque limit, you can probably just guess and nothing bad will happen. But if you're doing brakes, working on a steering system or tightening main-bearing caps, using a torque wrench and following the manufacturer's recommendations are mandatory. Torque wrenches are offered with different ends. These typically include ¼-, 3/8- and ½-inch sizes, though larger ones are offered. For many applications, a 3/8-inch unit is perfectly fine. For added versatility, many torque wrenches also come with adapters so they can be used with various sockets. Digital torque wrenches are probably the easiest to use. Just set the desired torque and they will alert you when you hit that amount. There are a few downsides, including that they require batteries, are more complex and tend to be a touch costlier than their analog counterparts. On the flip side, beam-style torque wrenches are incredibly simple, with basically no parts to break, but they're far more cumbersome to use. Splitting the difference are the clicking-style torque wrenches.

A smart thing to have in your toolbox

Torque wrenches... nope, they're not sexy, but they are super important. If you're planning on tackling automotive repairs, you'd be wise to have one of these in your toolbox. And the good news is, all versions are very affordable, easy to use and should be plenty accurate. It just boils down to personal preference. Do you want a simple one that's a bit more difficult to use, would you prefer a clicking-style torque wrench or are you all digital, all the time? Really, you can't go wrong with any of these tools, but you could certainly go wrong by not having one.

  • Q: Getting A Professional 24 Hour Emergency Locksmith
    A:
Lots of locksmiths advertise 24 hour emergency locksmith and boarding up services but how many are fully qualified in the said skill and how many are actually on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week when you really need them.

Being a locksmith, especially an emergency 24 hour call out locksmith can be a very lucrative and rewarding career that isn’t really effected by a turn down in the economy or the stock markets, people will always need locksmiths because people will forever lose or misplace their house, office or cars keys, get locked out of their house or office and regrettably buildings will still get broken into and burgled whether it’s a residential or commercial building.

Unfortunately the locksmith industry isn’t really a regulated industry, sure there are groups you can be members of but there is nothing in the law that stops un-skilled people watching a few YouTube videos and then touting themselves as a professional locksmiths, these people will probably successfully gain entry to you home, office or vehicle but usually take a while and cause lots of damage in the process.

So what should you be looking for when choosing a locksmith?

In case you adored this post and you would like to obtain details about locksmith foley al generously stop by our own web site. Look for any recognised bodies that they are members of and see if their website states who trained them and what level of training they received. One of the top Locksmith training colleges in the UK is the Train Locksmiths, Training College in Manchester who train locksmith to a high Level 3 Enhanced recognised standard, if their website states this, then you are usually in good hands, although a quick telephone call to the training college can confirm the validity of their claim.

A good locksmith will tend to advertise ‘non destructive entry’ as one of their services meaning if you are locked out they can gain entry to your home, office or vehicle without breaking your locks, thus saving you money, remember, anyone can break a lock but it takes a highly skilled professional to pick a lock and gain non destructive entry, also beware of the unscrupulous charlatans who will break your locks on purpose just so they can sell you new ones, usually at higher than retail prices.

So what about 24 hour call out?

This is a term that you see on almost all locksmith websites and in fact it has become a bit of a trend to display this claim, yet a large number of local locksmith do not actually offer this service, some will out right tell you that they can come out first thing in the morning while the worst ones will keep on answering the phone and stringing you along telling you they are busy and on another call. Locksmith call centres do this a lot, stringing you along while they themselves ring local locksmiths on their books trying to find one that will come out to you at 3am. Some locksmiths have started to put messages like "Speak directly with the locksmith and business owner, No call centre means no delays" on their website due to bad experiences many people have had with large call centres.
